Treaty 9, also known as the James Bay Treaty 9, is an agreement between the Government of Canada and several First Nations in Northern Ontario. It is one of the historic numbered treaties in Canada, signed in 1905 and 1906. Treaty 9 covers a vast region in Northern Ontario and Northern Quebec, including parts of what is now known as the James Bay and Hudson Bay areas.
The Treaty 9 communities, also referred to as the Treaty 9 First Nations, are the Indigenous communities whose ancestors signed the treaty. These communities are comprised of various First Nations, including the Cree (Omushkegowuk), Ojibway and Oji-Cree, among others. Some of the well-known communities that are part of Treaty 9 include:
